Tips To Stop That Local Home Repairman From Ripping You Off

It is indeed frustrating to get home and discover some appliances in your home not working just as you are about to use them. The idea of enjoying the rest of the evening after a cruel hard day's work is suddenly replaced by the realization that you cannot have this benefit after that microwave is acting up and not warming your food, or that your fridge suddenly is not doing its job to keep your food protected and frozen. In these cases, what measures do you take to solve the problem right away? Is a local home repairman required at this point? How do you find them?

If you are like most of them, you will probably grab that phone book or sit in front of your computer to search the internet to quickly find one or a company that can provide you an honest and experienced service man. Naturally, the one thing that would come to your mind as you do this is to avoid a man that rips you off with high charges.

But how can you avoid them?

By doing the following tips, you can avoid the serviceman from robbing your bank off but at the same time you get a quality service.

First thing to do is to get all data there is on the affected unit such as the manufacturer, model, and at least a brief description of the damage or issue of the appliance before you pick up the phone. The data will make it easier for the repairman to address the problem right even while you two are discussing on the phone. Plus, it makes you appear a smart consumer, a must so that the repairman doesn't take you for an ignorant in things like this.

Second is to see if the appliance is still under warranty or guarantee. If it is, then, find its factory authorized service center and avail the service or whatever is contained in the guarantee. Factory authorized service typically means the manufacturer of the unit is behind whenever something bad in the appliance has occurred and they are willing to do repair services so the consumer would not end up unhappy with their purchase. Depending on the fine prints, it may mean free of charge as well.

Third is to ask your friends or relatives for referrals. Word of mouth is usually a better way of finding a trustworthy home repair company.

Fourth is to find out if they accept credit cards. In frustrating matters like the one above, you usually are not ready with cash to pay for services. In this case, check the yellow pages or the internet website if the company is accepting credit cards. This is not only a convenience on your part but adds more security for you as the consumer. If in any case you are not happy with the results of the service, you can always file for a charge back.

Fifth is to see and compare ads. Companies which can afford big ads reveal that they know where the competition is, therefore, a good sign that they will provide good business. After all, those ads suggest they are building reputation and planning to stay in the business for long years.

And while you're at it, the final task is to ask questions to each of the company you are inquiring such as the years of their stay in the business, if they use original factory replacement parts, if any insurance is being offered, is there a written warranty on labor and parts, any corporate references, if the company has any court claims, and if the local home repairman they will be sending you has proper factory training certificate.
