Tips For Going Green

These days, the term ‘going green’ is something you’ve probably heard a few times around the way. If you haven’t, it generally refers to living a more simplified, less wasteful lifestyle. It’s all about learning to be efficient and doing small things daily that can help sustain and save our environment and the world we live in.

People who participate in the ‘green movement’ are growing every day as more awareness is being spread across the nation. Even big businesses are doing their part in running their businesses more efficiently, using more recyclable materials and eliminating wasteful operational costs. In other words, it seems like everyone is going green. If you’re looking to jump on the bandwagon, but don’t know where to begin, here are a few tips for going green that can help you make a difference:

Turn Off Water When Brushing Your Teeth

You may be surprised, but many people let the water run full force when they brush their teeth. You can save up to 4 gallons of water or more just by cutting the water while brushing. If you brush twice or three times daily, you can already imagine how much water you’re saving!

Recycle, Recycle, Recycle

Did I forget to mention to recycle? Almost every city or town has a recycling program and will either pick up your recyclable materials or have a drop off area for you to take them to. Recycling has been going on for years, but it’s amazing how many people still throw away recyclable materials.

Eliminate Junk Mail

There are a variety of free services you can find online that will help you take your name off of mailing lists. Eliminating junk mail can save a few hundred pounds of paper over the course of a year. Imagine if everyone did this – The numbers would be astronomical!

Give Away Clothing

Rather than throw away old clothing, give it to a friend in need or donate it to a local shelter. Even if the clothing is extremely worn, it can be reused for something else.

Use Both Sides of Paper

Using both sides of paper allows you to get double the life from an entire ream. For every ream (500 pages) you print, you just saved a few pounds of paper.

Take Showers – Not Baths

This one is more obvious, but a shower saves a considerable amount of water when compared to a bath. If you stay in the shower longer than you need to, it defeats the purpose here, so you need to find an equal balance.

Those are just a few tips that you can use to start doing your part to contribute to the green movement. Remember – These small things don’t seem like much, but if everyone did their part, it would add up over time and make a significant impact, so make sure you do your part to keep the environment a better place.
