7 Tips For Saving Energy At Home
These days, everyone is looking to save energy at home. And who wouldn’t want to? Not only are you contributing to conserving electricity (which is better for the environment), but you’re also dramatically cutting costs on your monthly power bill. In other words, when you do your part to save a little energy, everyone wins.
You can save energy at home without spending big bucks on new, expensive appliances that use less energy. By following a couple of the examples I’m about to list below, you’ll be putting more money in your pocket each month, giving you a few extra bucks to save for a rainy day!
Unplug Unused Appliances
You may or may not know this, but appliances that are left plugged in still use energy. Sure, they don’t use as much as they do when they’re running, but if you’re leaving them plugged in, you’re wasting money. Unplug small appliances in your kitchen and other small electronics in the household that you’re not using. Over time, you’ll start to see your costs drop on your power bill.
Wash Clothes in Cold Water
Washing clothes in hot water uses a lot of energy, as a fair amount of power is required to run the water heater that gives you hot water. By washing your clothes with cold water, you won’t even need to spark the power in that water heater, thus saving you money with every load!
Hang Dry Clothes
While many dryers these days are built to use less energy, many people are still using old dryers that suck power. Hang drying your clothes may sound like a pain, but the extra money you have in your wallet will thank you later!
Take Advantage of Natural Light
Rather than keeping the shades closed on a sunny day and turning on a light, take advantage of the natural light and open up the blinds on all of your windows. This goes for business owners too. If you work or own an office, keep those windows open and cut those lights.
Adjust Your Thermostat
If you’re able to program your thermostat, make sure you turn it low in the winter and it higher in the summer when you’re away from home. There is no point to have the heat on all day or your central air running full throttle when you’re not home. This can help you conserve a ton of energy, thus reducing your power bill.
Change Your Light Bulbs
Time to change out the light bulbs! Get rid of those old ones and replace them with new, high efficiency bulbs. They use an incredibly low amount of wattage and put out the same amount of light as their older counterparts. The best part about them – they are inexpensive and last nearly 3 times longer than older light bulbs.
Don’t Keep On Electronics
Do you keep your TV running at night? Have lights on in a room when you’re not even in it? Shut off lights turn off TV’s when you’re not using them. While this may seem obvious, many people fail to realize how much power their wasting when they do this.
And there you have it. Seven fool-proof tips on how to save energy at home that you can start taking advantage of today. Follow these tips, and your power bill will tell you every month “I told you so”.
