Preventing Salmonella

Salmonella is definitely a very serious issue and you want to do all you can to prevent it. This means you need to be conscious about the proper handling of foods. You may not be aware but it is animal feces that are responsible for the bacteria found in salmonella. That means any type of food that comes from an animal is potentially at risk. One of the main food items we get from animals are meats.

Always make sure you wash your hands with soap and water before you touch them. Make sure the surface where you process it is also cleaned. After you are done, you will need to wash your hands again so you don’t get it anywhere else. Poultry seems to be the type of meat where salmonella is the most prevalent. Make sure you cook the foods all the way in order to kill any such germs that may be found in them. Individuals that enjoy their meat very rare are at the greatest risk of salmonella poisoning.

Too many people are in a hurry when they are cooking foods. They don’t take the time to wash off cutting boards after cutting meat on it. They move right on to slicing vegetables on it. As a result, cross contamination takes place. You may be spreading very harmful germs doing this to everyone that will eat dinner with you. Take the time to use a separate cutting board for each action or to wash it thoroughly with soap and hot water between uses.

Various types of foods that contain eggs, mayonnaise, mustard, and similar ingredients need to be kept refrigerated. Picnics can be fun but unless the potato salad and macaroni salad are on ice I would suggest skipping them. As they sit out at room temperature or in the sun that bacteria related to salmonella can start to breed.

Education is a big part of preventing salmonella. Too many people don’t realize the risks they are putting themselves at. Learning proper techniques for cooking and keeping foods at the right temperature are important. If you are in doubt as to an item sitting out too long it is best to just throw it out.
