How Can I Get Ideas For Blog Posts

One of the most common things people ask once they have started a blog is ‘how can I get ideas for blog posts?’

Ok – so you know that a great blog must provide great content, but how do you go about finding stuff to write about which will keep people engaged and coming back for more?

My first piece of advice is to take a look at the things which are going on around you. I know it sounds a little naff but quite honestly there is stuff going on all the time in our day to day lives which would make a great basis for a blog post…

The thing you have to remember is that people love stuff which is ‘real’ and which they can relate to. Tell stories about things which have happened to you and then make a point or lesson within the story. The rude receptionist you came across yesterday morning could be the basis of a great post on a blog about internet marketing. It’s not directly related but you could describe how it made you feel and what your readers can learn from this to improve their customers buying experience. If your blog is in the gardening niche then just talk about what you did last weekend in the garden and I’m sure there were a few interesting things which other gardeners would be interested in?

My second tip is to take a look at other blogs in your niche. What sort of content do they post? What subjects seem to be ‘hot’ at the moment? I’m not saying copy their posts but they can be a great source of inspiration and ideas. Another good place is forums because you can quickly see the things which people are talking about the most.

Books and magazines – there’s another good place to look for ideas. Read around your subject and know it thoroughly. If you have a good general knowledge of your niche and regularly keep up to date with the things which are going on in that subject area then you should never struggle for ideas.
