Blogger Vs Wordpress
If you’ve decided to start an online blog one of the first decisions you’ll have to make is choosing between the different blogging platforms which are available. A ‘blogging platform’ is simply a means by which to create and manage a blog - the two most popular being Blogger and Wordpress and thus the ones we are going to focus on in this article. They are by no means your only options however – Squarespace, for example, is another blogging tool which I’ve used myself on previous occasions and could be worth investigating.
So Blogger V Wordpress – which is best?
Look around the internet (and especially around the internet marketing world) and you’ll find that most people use one of these two…
First let’s look at Blogger (also known as Blogspot):
This is probably the easiest way of creating a blog – simply go to http://www.blogger.com, sign up for a free account, choose a name for your blog, enter some profile information, choose a template and you’re good to go.
What makes Blogger.com so easy is that you don’t have to worry about buying webspace or uploading blogging software to the internet – everything is hosted on Bloggers website (you address will be http://yourblogname.blogspot.com) and it is basically all done for you. This makes it ideal if you lack technical knowledge or just want to get a blog up online in a hurry.
In the short term, then, Blogger is a great choice, however it is this ease of use which is also its downfall. Because everything is hosted by Blogger it means that if they decide one day that you have somehow broken one of their rules or someone complains about you, or whatever it might be – they can come along and close your blog without notice. This could be very bad news, especially if you’ve spent months or even years posting your content and building up a good relationship with your visitors.
Now let’s look at Wordpress:
For this you will need to sort out your own hosting and you’ll need to install the Wordpress software on your website. This is extremely easy however because they provide detailed tutorials and there is also a wealth of help available online if you get stuck. It is one of those things which can sound daunting but once you’ve done it you wonder why you worried!
Wordpress eliminates one of the main problems with Blogger but that’s not the only reason why in my opinion Wordpress wins the battle hands down. A Wordpress blog is much more customizable. There are literally thousands of themes available (or you could even have your own personalised one created), and there is a huge choice of widgets and add-ons which you can use to monetize your blog and get it looking and functioning exactly how you want it.
Blogger has its uses, but unless you are in a desperate hurry to get a blog online Wordpress provides a much better option.
